Wal-Mart Sees Back To School Sales Up

NEW YORK -- Perhaps foreshadowing good times to come throughout the retail sector, Wal-Mart Monday said that its back-to-school sales were "off to a good start" and said that same-store sales met expectations for the first week of August.

Wal-Mart previously said that same-store sales would increase 3-5% for the August selling period, which covers Aug. 2-29.

The Bentonville, Ark-based company said the strongest product categories at its U.S. stores last week were food, intimate apparel, swimwear, men's apparel, electronics, toys, pet supplies, live plants, health and beauty aids and pharmaceutical goods, according to a statement.

Wal-Mart also said that stores along the East Coast and in the Midwest proved strongest last week, saying improvements in both traffic and average ticket drove last week's gains.
